PRS Gives Archon and Archon Classic Amps a Black Paisley Limited-Edition Finish

PRS Guitars has introduced a limited run of Black Paisley versions of its Archon and Archon Classic amplifiers and matching speaker cabinets.

Announced on October 6, the new finish is being offered across six models, with production limited to between 75 and 200 examples worldwide depending on the individual product.

The Black Paisley range includes the Archon 50 Combo, Archon Classic 50 Combo, Archon 50 Head, Archon Classic Head, Archon 1×12 cabinet and Archon 2×12 cabinet.

“I thought the original brown paisley amp covering was handsome, and the all-black version has always been admired for its striking look and durability – highly recommended,” said Paul Reed Smith, PRS Guitars Managing General Partner.

Beyond the new covering, the amplifiers retain the specifications of their respective standard models.

The Archon is a two-channel, 6L6-powered amplifier built around five gain stages before the master volume. Its lead channel is voiced to move from classic rock into higher-gain territory, while the clean channel is designed to maintain clarity and headroom at higher volumes.

The Archon Classic takes a different approach to the same basic platform. Its lead channel uses a revised gain structure aimed more towards ’70s and ’80s rock tones, with a stronger emphasis on the midrange. The clean channel can also be pushed from cleaner sounds into edge-of-breakup territory.

Both Black Paisley cabinet options use a closed-back construction and Celestion V-Type speakers. PRS says the speaker was selected to work across the range of clean, crunch and higher-gain sounds available from the Archon amplifiers.

Numbers vary considerably between the individual Black Paisley models, with PRS confirming worldwide production runs of between 75 and 200 units.
