GWAR share HD ‘School’s Out’ video ahead of Beyond Hell 20th-anniversary reissue

Meta description with personality: GWAR revisit Beyond Hell with a remastered 20th-anniversary edition, an HD “School’s Out” video and a new North American tour this autumn.

GWAR have released an HD version of their video for “School’s Out”, their cover of the Alice Cooper track, ahead of a 20th-anniversary edition of Beyond Hell arriving on 25 September.

Originally released in 2006, Beyond Hell has been newly remastered by Paul Logus, whose credits include Anthrax and Killswitch Engage. The anniversary edition also adds a previously unreleased outro recorded during the original album sessions.

The record was produced by Devin Townsend, who recalled how his involvement with GWAR began after meeting the late Dave Brockie while the two were on tour.

“I had been a GWAR fan since I was a kid. I loved the freedom, the metal, the spectacle, and the passion that went into it all,” Townsend said. “I met Brockie on a tour we did together and, after cornering him in an elevator basically telling him I’d work for free, I found myself co-producing Beyond Hell. Dave and Corey came to Vancouver to stay with me, and we recorded at Profile Studios. The drums and basic tracks were done at Slave Pit in Richmond, Virginia, and the whole process took about three months.”

He added: “GWAR were, and are, an amazing combination of artistic freedom, absurdity, and hard work bundled up with metal and performance. Loved them then, love them now.”

The 20th-anniversary release also marks the first vinyl pressing of Beyond Hell. The record comes on 180-gram vinyl in a tri-fold sleeve designed to unfold into an inverted cross, while the CD edition includes a fold-out poster.

A standard gold vinyl edition is limited to 2,000 copies, while the announcement also lists a 300-copy “Blood Moon” edition associated with GWAR’s official store and a 200-copy “Blood Smear” edition through Metal Injection. The press release separately states that the vinyl release has sold out through the GWAR store, so current availability of those variants should be confirmed before publication.

The anniversary edition runs to 13 tracks:

  1. Intro
  2. War Is All We Know
  3. Murderer’s Muse
  4. Go to Hell!
  5. I Love the Pigs
  6. Tormentor

  9. The Ultimate Bohab
  10. The One That Will Not Be Named
  11. Back in Crack
