Joanne Shaw Taylor looks back on lost love with ‘The Girl That You Loved Before’
Joanne Shaw Taylor looks back on changing relationships in new single “The Girl That You Loved Before”, taken from upcoming album The Trouble With Love.
Joanne Shaw Taylor has released “The Girl That You Loved Before”, the latest single from her forthcoming studio album The Trouble With Love, which is due on 23 October via Journeyman Records.
The British blues-rock artist has also released an official video for the track. Moving between performance footage and scenes of Taylor alone in a dimly lit bar, the video reflects the song’s focus on memory, changing relationships and the distance that can develop between two people who were once close.
Musically, “The Girl That You Loved Before” pairs Taylor’s vocal with a steady, melodic arrangement before opening out into a prominent guitar solo. Its lyrics look back at a past relationship from the perspective of someone considering how much both people — and their memories of each other — may have changed.
“This song came from looking back at past relationships and realising how much we change over time,” Joanne shares. “It’s about being remembered for who you were, not necessarily who you are now. I wrote it to explore that nostalgia, that longing, and the bittersweet ache it brings.”
The song is the latest preview of The Trouble With Love, which was produced by Kevin Shirley. Previous tracks from the album include its title song, featuring Joe Bonamassa, and “What Good Is My Love?”, featuring Orianthi, alongside “Hell Or High Water”, “This Is Who I Am”, “Tired Of Being Right” and “Bad Boy”.
The ten-track album also includes “Never Gonna Please ‘Em All”, “You And Me (Rachel’s Song)” and “Death Wish”.
Taylor is also continuing her US live schedule ahead of the album’s release, with shows in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky during September. A further US run begins at Albuquerque’s KiMo Theatre on 28 October and continues through November, with Bywater Call appearing on selected dates before Robert Jon & The Wreck join the later part of the tour.
The Trouble With Love will be released on 23 October through Journeyman Records.
